For a low-income person, divorce can create serious financial burdens that endanger their most basic needs.

Bradley, a disabled veteran, was in and out of the hospital when he was served divorce papers. Unable to work due to his disabilities, he could not afford the legal representation needed to protect his rights as the opposing party moved to claim their shared home. He found himself facing a tremendous legal problem on his own.

“The possibility of homelessness loomed large, and the weight of it all felt overwhelming," he recalled.

Fortunately, Bradley was familiar with Bay Area Legal Services and reached out for help through our Florida Veterans Legal Helpline. After explaining his issue and qualifying for services, Attorney Tomoko Ransen of the Major General Ernest A. and Marilyn Bedke Veterans Law Center took on his case.

Tomoko stepped in as Bradley’s advocate, negotiating terms that worked for both parties. They ultimately agreed that Bradley would remain in the home and pay his ex-spouse her share of the home’s value over two years, an arrangement that was manageable for him.

“From the very beginning, Ms. Ransen provided not only expert guidance but also a sense of calm and focus that I desperately needed throughout this process,” Bradley remarked. “By setting specific goals and a timeline, she helped me with a roadmap to follow, which was invaluable during such an emotionally taxing time.”

With this assistance, Bradley was able to continue focusing on his health and recovery. He shared:

I am forever thankful for the role you played in protecting my future. Your work truly made a difference, and I will always carry this gratitude with me.”
