Am I eligible for SNAP food stamps?

The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) determines eligibility for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). SNAP used to be called the Food Stamps Program. The amount of SNAP benefits you receive depends upon how many people are in the household, the household income, and certain allowable deductions.

Able-Bodied Adults without Dependents (ABAWDS) between the ages of 18-50, who do not have children or mental or physical disabilities, are limited to 3 months of SNAP every 3 years. It is best to apply to see if you qualify, as there are exceptions and sometimes work requirements or work activity requirements.

To be eligible for SNAP:

  • You must be able to show proof of your identity.
  • You must live in the State of Florida.
  • You must be a U.S. citizen or qualified non-citizen.
  • You must cooperate with Child Support Enforcement if there’s a parent not living in the household who would be obligated to pay support. (You can discuss any possible reasons for non-cooperation when you go to the Child Support Enforcement Office.)
  • You must have a Social Security Number or be applying for one.

You will not be eligible for SNAP (Food Stamps) if you have been convicted of drug trafficking, are a fleeing felon, and a few other special cases.
